I do not drive, and Sharav and I lived together in New York City for nearly a decade, but dogs are not supposed to enter the subway system, so I only took him on the subway one time.
In early 2020 I was close to renting an apartment in the Upper West Side, and it had a rickety interior open-rise staircase that Sharav would have needed to climb multiple times a day, but I wasn’t sure if he would be able to manage it. The subway rules allowed for (small) dogs that could remain inside a carrying case, so I cut holes for Sharav’s legs in a blue Ikea bag and made him get inside it.
He was not amused, but tolerated the ride. At the prospective apartment, I spent an hour that evening trying and trying to get him to go up the staircase, but he would not do it – too scary! I ended up not renting there, and we stayed on East 29th Street instead – leading to a cramped 2020.
