Sleeping

November 2014 journal entry

22 August 2023 by Natan Gesher

Here’s an excerpt from a November 2014 journal entry:

It took a long time to love Sharav, but I finally realized it one night… I was sitting in my apartment in New York… and it was pretty warm for November, and I was hungry and wanted to get up and make dinner. But I could hear him taking very very gentle, slow, somewhat irregular breaths, and I kept thinking that I’d rather sit there and listen to him breathing, and watch his face from afar, than get up and get myself some food. I would rather watch him in his bed from my couch than get on with my own life. And then I realized two things: I love this dog; in the beginning, I didn’t love this dog.
