Tel Aviv

Mauling

23 August 2023 by Natan Gesher

Some months after I adopted Sharav and he almost immediately fell ill from ticks, I took him to visit friends for a holiday weekend at the rural hilltop where they lived, and we went out for a walk after dinner one night. Sharav rushed to grab some leftover chicken that had been set down, and another dog who lived on the hill lunged and mauled him viciously, biting him on the skull and directly under his eye before I was able to pull them apart.

He was seriously injured and the wounds became badly infected with really nasty pus, and because of the holiday and the isolated setting, it took around 36 hours before I was finally able to get him seen by a veterinarian in Tel Aviv. He very nearly died.

All the people involved were extremely apologetic (and none of us had any idea that setting down a plate of food between two dogs like that could have led to a bad outcome), but that incident led to my decision for Sharav to be castrated, once he could safely have the surgery.

Thank you to everyone who helped me with Sharav over the years. I hope you know that he loved you, and he loved spending time with you.

Would you be willing to share some memories or photos of Sharav with me?
